I will be there in the artist alley, table A15. Me and <a href="http://larryewatts.com/">Larry Watts</a> will be sharing a table and kicking it with <a href="http://tarantinocomics.blogspot.com/">James</a>, art collector extraordinaire.
<br />
<br />
I've been informed we will be sandwiched between <a href="http://www.carldraws.com/Carl_Petersons_comic_art_portfolio/welcome.html">Carl Peterson</a> and <a href="http://www.freddieart.com/">Freddie Williams</a>. Wowzers.<br />
<br />
Also noteworthy, I've started my new comic <a href="http://shiverbureau.com/2012/04/04/welcome-to-london-chapter-1-page-1/" target="_blank">Shiver Bureau</a>. You can read the first four pages now. It will update on Thursdays and it's full of ghostly adventure.<br />
<br />
Hopefully I will see you at C2E2. MegaCon 2012 craziness is over. Had to put my life on hold as I prepared for the comic convention craziness. Then I do it all over again in April for C2E2. First time at that show, really looking forward to it. Until then, let's start up these top 50 again.<br />
<br />
Preacher from DC. I know nothing about this guy. I tried to do a little research and still didn't really understand what it's about. So I pretended he was Hellblazer. So for fans, sorry if I got him completely wrong.<br />
<br />
Then Iceman. I loved him on the old 80s cartoons. But I gave him some pants because...well, I'd be wearing pants.<br />
<br />
Next week Hank Pym, dude with too many personalities. Also Huntress. Every time I try to draw her, I fail. Will I succeed this time? Tune in to find out.<br />
<br />
Top 50 is part of a series based on CBR's top Marvel/DC list. <a href="http://walterostlie.blogspot.com/search/label/Top%2050%20Characters">To see the rest of the series look here</a>. Another great year at MegaCon. This con just keeps getting better and better. They expanded the convention this year and it was huge. It wasn't SDCC huge, but it was big.<br />
<br />
I want to thank all the fans, friends and just curious people who swung by my booth. If you picked up a copy of Cubicles, commissioned me for art, purchased a print or even just flipped through my book and had a conversation then I want to say you ROCK!<br />
<br />
Best moment of the convention for me? I look up and who should appear?!?!?<br />
<br />
None other then then awesome that is Brent Spiner A.K.A. Data from Star Trek Next Generation. This dude was my hero, I loved ST TNG. Data as Sherlock Holmes were my all time favorite episodes. So I had a total fan boy moment and freaked out. I hope I didn't embarass myself too much.<br />
<br />
He was totally awesome, I gave him a copy of the drawing I did of him. He was kind enough to sign the original piece and also take a picture with me and gave me a fist bump.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA4VXo79ejnmRVMJd7f1ofguDV0Ps-bcjW-M7ltPvy8lfLzR1Th1F48N3LPyUVmR8rhzwHly4a9Ra6okwUor0Es-WujXAoPZ3ELPBxrtUGMfY6rABd_fdiF_2ujfcwHLOqDJPtsh82DjJp/s1600/DATA_SignedByBrent.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA4VXo79ejnmRVMJd7f1ofguDV0Ps-bcjW-M7ltPvy8lfLzR1Th1F48N3LPyUVmR8rhzwHly4a9Ra6okwUor0Es-WujXAoPZ3ELPBxrtUGMfY6rABd_fdiF_2ujfcwHLOqDJPtsh82DjJp/s320/DATA_SignedByBrent.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This was an insane piece. It was 11x17 overnight commission. Actually I should say early morning into midday commission. The concept is crazy awesome. It is the 3 storms from Big Trouble in Little China but with Spawn, Ghost Rider and Cloak. He also wanted the composition to be taken from the 'The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly' posters with the 3 cards. Not too mention a dude being wiped out of existence similar to the new 'Darkest Hour' movie. Fun piece! Thanks for the challenge!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSJ5dqFJU3soZPboCT8woxz4eibUBKHLZ4MqqUxqtnIizEI4R61YSWaQ46YNVNPHoCEin0b5VbvEHC6J0IdewYe_IqMUGq9oKFlk1p5sdiQx6pMaP7B0Qtuy7JgMvHVZpp5DSW3CsnY794/s1600/3storms.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSJ5dqFJU3soZPboCT8woxz4eibUBKHLZ4MqqUxqtnIizEI4R61YSWaQ46YNVNPHoCEin0b5VbvEHC6J0IdewYe_IqMUGq9oKFlk1p5sdiQx6pMaP7B0Qtuy7JgMvHVZpp5DSW3CsnY794/s320/3storms.jpg" width="203" /></a></div>
<br />
This was for Thomas. I've been to MegaCon 3 years in a row and Tom has gotten a piece from me each of those 3 years. I can't really thank him enough for all the support he's given me, especially that first year when I was just a scared dude with no idea what I was doing. Thanks man! You can check out the other sketches I've done for him at his gallery <a href="http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetailSearch.asp?Artist=Walter+Ostlie&GCat=40516" target="_blank">Gallery</a> . I think I've been improving...<br />
<br />

<br />
These next two were also for a big supporter. He's come by all three years as well. Hell, second year he gave me a silver sharpie which has served me well ever since. I still have it and use it to sign pretty much everything. Also these are my first pre-con commissions I've received, so that was an awesome moment. Thanks Will!<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Ok, so Gambit is AWESOME! I want everyone to ask me to draw Gambit. How can you not love this dude? This was also my first convention watercolor commission. I think it went really well and I had way more fun with this then the copics. It wasn't even all that messy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFvcFroGWgzSV0CICeNneN5L39kK99YYLFhcr7vy0DYYqSA_rQfTANynAhgLxd3jhNN1G2JtGulo1TWAkBfvp3jg8Xb1pBTOozN-D1dM_U4OMBBhqKywz5kI7lY3-3Ut3bD4MhTlba5jaL/s1600/gambitrogue.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFvcFroGWgzSV0CICeNneN5L39kK99YYLFhcr7vy0DYYqSA_rQfTANynAhgLxd3jhNN1G2JtGulo1TWAkBfvp3jg8Xb1pBTOozN-D1dM_U4OMBBhqKywz5kI7lY3-3Ut3bD4MhTlba5jaL/s320/gambitrogue.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
MOOR watercolors! I actually had fun drawing all of Iron Man's armor. When I hear Iron Man I cringe a little inside, but I think this came out really well. I can't wait to draw him again.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigcCNOj2XQC-vj6pNn4nrkJP8AzsjHUbE6NiGrmbBHShpsAzvm_LY5eGmBYmK_ZOe6WYeTeZ204U2927qX1phKDTp_iGSmb-3zTuiuCrjqnuSln1Ri0DwnWyVmEahuBPX_9anzMUmaJDV3/s1600/IronMan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigcCNOj2XQC-vj6pNn4nrkJP8AzsjHUbE6NiGrmbBHShpsAzvm_LY5eGmBYmK_ZOe6WYeTeZ204U2927qX1phKDTp_iGSmb-3zTuiuCrjqnuSln1Ri0DwnWyVmEahuBPX_9anzMUmaJDV3/s320/IronMan.jpg" width="255" /></a></div>
<br />
Another first! My first sketch cover. If I thought I got nervous drawing in someone's sketch book, this is just as bad. At least a sketchbook has another page. There isn't any other pages with this...maybe the back cover? I think I could have fit some more swords in there....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguYn1D3qW65WkuiPc4kN7n1qSvco0TiXsH-uEzV2AAJEHpdb0OihyphenhyphenNWjq2_5lin1zPZFXny9Fg3jSdY3z_Qm2N78doUpVMnUKPvVdS0wDZeZbLsTKB5aZrn4dGQkWcWX9wlCBbyR8i9nr0/s1600/Deadpool.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguYn1D3qW65WkuiPc4kN7n1qSvco0TiXsH-uEzV2AAJEHpdb0OihyphenhyphenNWjq2_5lin1zPZFXny9Fg3jSdY3z_Qm2N78doUpVMnUKPvVdS0wDZeZbLsTKB5aZrn4dGQkWcWX9wlCBbyR8i9nr0/s320/Deadpool.jpg" width="220" /></a></div>
<br />
I actually missed a picture of a sketch that I though came out awesome. but I am sure my boy James will hook me up. Also I have an Avenging Spider-Man sketchcover I still need to do. I don't know how I feel about doing a cover when Joe Mad's art on the inside, but I am going to do my best to rise to the challenge.<br />
<br />
And here's my booth. Peace out, till next year or C2E2!<br />

Moving right along to #43. I am actually familar with these two. I hope this is a new trend. Actually next week is another The Question. Sigh, hats are so hard to draw!<br />
<br />
I have my list of characters finalized almost. Looks like I will have a top 25. Only a handful of them are Marvel/DC. Most are from created owned stories that really blew my socks off and would recommend you read them as soon as possible.<br />
<br />
Next week Colossus and The Question.<br />

So this week I didn't do a character from my Top 50 list. The guy and gal up there are my characters that I am currently working with. Pickle is the dude in front and Trish is the lady in the back. It should be a fun little tale. If you've been following my stuff for awhile you might recognize the name Pickle. He was one of my first comic story creations. He's changed a bit and his partner has had a sex change.<br />
<br />
The next character on my list was supposed Green Lantern (Hal) and I got to thinking why he was on my list. Sure, he was my favorite character when I was a kid. I thought he had the coolest outfit and his powers were wicked cool. But I think it was mostly that he looked really cool. Maybe that is why I like green so much today.<br />
<br />But now, I don't really follow the character, I didn't read Blackest Night. Actually I don't read much superhero stuff (except Invincible, which rocks hard). So long story short (too late) I decided I am going to revamp my top 50 list. First off, maybe not 50 characters, maybe only 20. Also there won't be many Marvel/DC characters, maybe 1, maybe 2. And they may not all be comic characters. Who knows. So until I finalize my list, it will only be CBR's top list.<br />
<br />I will start my list up when I figure out how many people are on the list. Next week Deadshot and Thanos.<br />

My pick this week is Galactus. I don't know much about him. The first time I drew him, I gotta admit I didn't really get it. But I had a lot of fun drawing him. I've realized I've made my top 50 list as a kind of a 'I want to draw this character' as opposed to anything to do with the character's personality or story. Though once we start getting into the higher numbers, we will get into some character's I've actually read stories for. We will also get out of the Marvel/DC universes. Yay!<br />
<br />
Don't know much about Spider Woman or Blue Beetle. I do love Beetle's costume though...But I do not like drawing it :-)<br />

The Invisible Woman and Lois Lane. I also decided to make my own list. So bottom of my list is Wolverine. I prefer the non-costumed version for several reason but the main one being I don't understand those wombat ears at all.<br />

<br />
Ah Psylocke. I wonder if it is hard to the comic industry to find new and exciting ways to expose female flesh.<br />

I've started work on my next project. It's a supernatural, action story. It takes place in an alternate version of our world. It's a little Hellblazer meets Leage of Extraordinary Gentlemen. B.P.R.D meets Sherlock Holmes. It should be a fun book. I am shooting for a February 2012 release online. Yep it will be a webcomic... or should I say a comic that is on the web? <br />

In the meantime, I still will be doing warmups and whatnot to keep the art skills up. So I decided to do a weekly feature called Top 50 Marvel/DC. I always have problem deciding who to draw. It tends to be the same character. Batman, Gambit, Deadpool, Harley, Gambit, Poison Ivy, Gambit. </div>

So Comic Book Resources was kind enough to put together a list of the top 50 Marvel and DC characters based on fan votes. A little something different this week. Sequentials!<br />
<br />
Not only that, but I go a little into the process from different thumbnails up to a semi completed page.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtPTlqey4i5-HaFfhqvWE8C95M8G3h456CuWL6ogyLN6WopU9OJZt0NKFijnhTOIQ33k-P59zAjx4aCLNDf5L-J_MGL-qKn2_janIoxyRqlG2PRw2UN1cQONTIT1Cb7CYOy_p9r39jArnQ/s1600/pittwildcat_proc1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" ida="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtPTlqey4i5-HaFfhqvWE8C95M8G3h456CuWL6ogyLN6WopU9OJZt0NKFijnhTOIQ33k-P59zAjx4aCLNDf5L-J_MGL-qKn2_janIoxyRqlG2PRw2UN1cQONTIT1Cb7CYOy_p9r39jArnQ/s320/pittwildcat_proc1.jpg" width="206" /></a><br />
This is my first attempt at a layout. I don't have a script, I am just spit balling right now. I know I want a city, PITT and Spartan. I always loved PITT. He was just so brutal and made no apologize for not being anything more then that. And then Spartan (or is it Cyclops?) I just really dug his design. I didn't understand his leg fins but I didn't care.<br />
<br />
So that first panel is supposed to be a city...hey I am just thumbnailing, leave me alone. Then Spartan faces off with a foot. Then close up of Spartan. Then PITT being stoic. Then fight. Then PITT chokes out Spartan. <br />
<br />
I thought it was a little tight and the panels didn't really breath. There was no WOW moment either. All the panels are about the same size too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjxueLbEVaYrQru7pzUMYsBRp10RvoGNI8rPBbnYoG8Plxma114fYu0xG2RLbL56Vsv0woeL1z8UKgGQamKohji4IcpKXEs9VLSwqDTCHgj7Zd3_BBmris9aHZXiba4S0HuhFl4T6OuVQ3/s1600/pittwildcat_proc2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" ida="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjxueLbEVaYrQru7pzUMYsBRp10RvoGNI8rPBbnYoG8Plxma114fYu0xG2RLbL56Vsv0woeL1z8UKgGQamKohji4IcpKXEs9VLSwqDTCHgj7Zd3_BBmris9aHZXiba4S0HuhFl4T6OuVQ3/s320/pittwildcat_proc2.jpg" width="207" /></a></div>
So this is the second attempt. There may have been a couple other panel sketches. I will try to keep better track of all my skribbles and not erase them all. <br />
<br />
Starts with the city. Then PITT crouching in foreground, Spartan in background. CU of Spartan and then aggressive PITT. Then attack.<br />
<br />
Not much different then the first one. I thought the panels had more room and panel 4 was more exciting. But PITT was way too small in the last panel. LAME. I do like panel 4's PITT pose but it wasn't meant to be.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="border: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSvAYBNicYRwLxr2jCuELUVc5IVqrBgPtcGRH0yJoUOGDhavUepyk7z6rai-iNTCwIs1szwedm5dEwA5lLE74fJwmq0PMVsrzODYF-CkwWReM54b6JNCxUkiqx26pAPnYNBpNoJZLspHtI/s1600/pittwildcat_proc2.5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" ida="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSvAYBNicYRwLxr2jCuELUVc5IVqrBgPtcGRH0yJoUOGDhavUepyk7z6rai-iNTCwIs1szwedm5dEwA5lLE74fJwmq0PMVsrzODYF-CkwWReM54b6JNCxUkiqx26pAPnYNBpNoJZLspHtI/s320/pittwildcat_proc2.5.jpg" style="cursor: move;" unselectable="on" width="207" /></a></div>
Here I get rid of the cityscape and just show the side of the building with a energy blast and PITT jumping to safety. Tried a more interesting composition in panel 2 with PITT kneeling in the foreground and framing Spartan in the background. But the pose didn't really work with the shot, his leg would have been in the way.<br />
<br />
This one didn't change much, I tried to make PITT bigger in the last panel. But it still was too small for me.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn8DNLzOv79MAsuV8aZpDAaP0D8yIo74vrxeb1XbFEdX2TTfrsdRjzv7V1LYJznWMdZdHsFuhXXVefmesZoBVOEvRIdNVAdD2bdB2xDEEL05f9PMawY6kGGAZe8apYQzG-7ukPvkXF0IsW/s1600/pittwildcat_proc3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" ida="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn8DNLzOv79MAsuV8aZpDAaP0D8yIo74vrxeb1XbFEdX2TTfrsdRjzv7V1LYJznWMdZdHsFuhXXVefmesZoBVOEvRIdNVAdD2bdB2xDEEL05f9PMawY6kGGAZe8apYQzG-7ukPvkXF0IsW/s320/pittwildcat_proc3.jpg" width="207" /></a></div>
OK, now I am getting annoyed. Sequentials are tough. There are a million ways to draw something but prolly only a handful of good ones.<br />
<br />
So we go back to the cityscape. panel 2 I decide to show full bodies on both characters plus some buildings. Then we do a close up on PITT, notice he is on the other side. The Spartan charges up. Then ATTACK.<br />
<br />
PITT is pretty large in this last panel, which I like. I prolly tried to draw the last panel 20 times before I got this. I couldn't figure out the perspective of PITT in the air, Spartan on the ground and energy blast between then. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcap8CK8B6SOB7agbLBt2M7Dbxj5VbmyidkMNJ-1kuF3r2ItaISPXk_3yKgeRSHOsZp2UsHytI5YKTXf7P7bmPe9c4-WtoSBdySG2efIl9RwIQkIua8PFIMvc586rOl65TbcoEbu0bZwYP/s1600/pittwildcat_proc4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" ida="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcap8CK8B6SOB7agbLBt2M7Dbxj5VbmyidkMNJ-1kuF3r2ItaISPXk_3yKgeRSHOsZp2UsHytI5YKTXf7P7bmPe9c4-WtoSBdySG2efIl9RwIQkIua8PFIMvc586rOl65TbcoEbu0bZwYP/s320/pittwildcat_proc4.jpg" width="207" /></a></div>
I take a step back and decide this is the best I can do right now. I am moving the camera from long to short distance. I am moving the horizon line up and down. I am including background.<br />
<br />
So I decide to stick with this layout and now clean it up. I twisted Spartan in the last panel because the original pose was a little too lame. However it kind of threw off my alignment of characters. I could have slid PITT up a little but then I would have lost some of his hand. I could have broken the panel border but that would have made the reader skip panel 4.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhM4mfREbwG3_aiKL5gZTURbkCJ2JNgEhSjTOyb8qoU7PTtm95QFknXFy5zxcJzp9U8zVJSOwJiyH5fy5RgUU1cAekoiOl4mbFMKZonmd_Lrn9unjBhpXMS3n2VUT6t8djBrYf9KtdqoMIm/s1600/pittwildcat_proc5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" ida="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhM4mfREbwG3_aiKL5gZTURbkCJ2JNgEhSjTOyb8qoU7PTtm95QFknXFy5zxcJzp9U8zVJSOwJiyH5fy5RgUU1cAekoiOl4mbFMKZonmd_Lrn9unjBhpXMS3n2VUT6t8djBrYf9KtdqoMIm/s320/pittwildcat_proc5.jpg" width="209" /></a></div>
Now I do a quick "ink". This is really loose for a finished page. I did it more for practice of composition then taking it too completion. I figure if I can fire off a lot of these quick layouts then I can get better quicken then if I did a page all the way to completion. Really after the layout it is just polishing. So hopefully you're polishing a diamond and not a turd.<br />
<br />
All of these are digital. If I was doing this page for real. I would have printed out the blue lines above on 11x17 bristol and then pencilled it for real. And then inked it.<br />
<br />
I know it is a lot of steps. but I am still unsure of my skills, so I take a lot of steps. Maybe in a few years I will be able to shorten the process.<br />

I try to put some thicker border about the characters and foreground elements. thin lines on the background. Just trying to create some depth with line weight and quality. <img height="96" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSvAYBNicYRwLxr2jCuELUVc5IVqrBgPtcGRH0yJoUOGDhavUepyk7z6rai-iNTCwIs1szwedm5dEwA5lLE74fJwmq0PMVsrzODYF-CkwWReM54b6JNCxUkiqx26pAPnYNBpNoJZLspHtI/s320/pittwildcat_proc2.5.jpg" style="left: 168px; opacity: 0.3; position: absolute; top: 887px; visibility: hidden;" width="62" /></div>Walter Ostliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17150771699713631888noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8826804444369433678.post-76242389656564059892011-10-18T17:03:00.000-04:002011-10-18T17:03:26.600-04:00Marvel Feedback<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
Got the response from Marvel. Which was basically keep working. However they did give me some things to work on and tips. So figured you guys would like to see it also. These are things I've often felt I was lacking in and I am not really sure how to fix. Anatomy, perspective, no problem. I know how to study and practice those. But depth and cinematography? I think those are more natural born talents that are harder to hone. <br />
<br />
<b>"Change how close and how far away your camera is from the action. You are using mostly one distance from the action and it makes the story feel static. Make the reader feel like they are there in the scene with them. Move the camera around so the readers feel like they are moving around with the action, dodging out of the way of the characters, looking over their shoulders, knocked down and looking up at them etc. Pull the camera out to show more of the figures. </b><br />
<br />
<b>I’d suggest bringing as much scope to the panels as possible, with backgrounds and camera angles and camera distance. You’re doing that already but take it to another level. Think how Olivier Coipel is able to make even a two head shot feel like a window on a wider, grander world instead of a box around two heads. Make the reader feel like they can step through the panel and join the characters. </b><br />
<br />
<b>Try to draw the most exciting second of actions. It’s not enough to draw what is happening, but to capture the exact second when things are most exciting so the art is most exciting. Imagine what a sports photographer would look for if they’re trying to photograph a football game. What would be THE shot that would land them on the front page of a newspaper. This doesn’t have to be every panel but makes the story more dynamic and active. The reader then imagines the actions that led up to that panel and the ones afterwards and engages them more with the story."</b><br />

These are from Astonishing X-Men 37.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Overall I am pretty happy with how they came out. I never draw dragons, so I am not sure why I decided to pick this script. Dragons are tough. I think I just wanted to draw the city. I am most happy with page 2, but I really do like the Foom head on the bottom of page 5.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
So these have been sent off to a dude at Marvel to look over. I am sure it will be a while before I am up in the queue, but once I hear back I will be sure to let you know any pointers I get.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
If you guys want to leave me some pointers, I'd love to hear them. I really did learn a lot from these pages. Mostly what works and doesn't work for me. The other thing I learned was just to finish the page. Sometimes I know something is wrong, but I just don't have the time to rethink every move and erase an hour of work just because something is wrong. I have to file away that learning moment and use it next time I draw a page. Otherwise I would never finish. Plus you also get to learn how to try to hide mistakes. :-)</div>

Another week means time for another update. Well almost a week. First up we have some pieces I did for Drawn Blanks. Drawn Blanks is a themed sketch blog that I started with some friends. Each week we select a new theme and do our own take on it. Here we got Princess Bride and Silver Age Marvel. Check out the blog at <a href="http://www.drawnblanks.com/">http://www.drawnblanks.com/</a>.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
First up is the completed piece I showed last time. Watercolors are super fun. I love the way the colors mix and how easily it is to blend.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Next up is all my warmups for last week. These are little 4.5x5 inch boards. I really wanted to play around with watercolors, so this was a really great way to introduce myself to them.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
I think the watercolors allow me to be more 'messy' which is my natural state. Markers are cool, but I always felt like I had to be so deliberate with them.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
I finished my set of cards for 5finity and will be sending them back this week. Hopefully they get approved.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Other then that I have some stuff I need to finish up so I can start working on actual stories again.</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit4t8H0BEcq0qhCtYtabRlbdys_ggN8uis83RdePXvuOf8E5NcfNvCW2yJ9_gTIQ04aSleyystnoOu8QLhvkIvPVfNpjFspo5X3uoXdeTjK0UT1ZmEDu7l4_skL7jG89xUFLapmuBh6w9H/s1600/jordanmead_oc_ink.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit4t8H0BEcq0qhCtYtabRlbdys_ggN8uis83RdePXvuOf8E5NcfNvCW2yJ9_gTIQ04aSleyystnoOu8QLhvkIvPVfNpjFspo5X3uoXdeTjK0UT1ZmEDu7l4_skL7jG89xUFLapmuBh6w9H/s320/jordanmead_oc_ink.jpg" width="206" xaa="true" /></a>So I was thinking about these warmups and while they are awesome practice for me, I doubt you want me spamming you all day long with my trashy art.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
So I have a new idea! I will keep doing my warmups but just not show them to you!</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Well I guess that isn't really far. How about this? I will do my warmups and at the end of the week, I will compile some of the better ones and post them.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
That way you can still see my dregs and not get daily spam from me. I will also try to include a more complete piece as well. So you can see why I warm up.</div>
<br />
So in honor of that, I'll meet you halfway and give you a half-complete finished piece...does that make sense? This will eventually have ink wash...maybe watercolors....do I dare?Walter Ostliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17150771699713631888noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8826804444369433678.post-19660472347254739752011-09-01T21:12:00.000-04:002011-09-01T21:13:02.258-04:00Warmup: Catwoman<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">

Ever do one of those drawings, where you don't actually look at what you're drawing? Well I just did that with this one. Wasn't really paying attention, just going with it. But now that I finished and am looking at it, I can see a bunch of insanity going on. Oh well...just a warmup right?<br />
<br />
Funny thing about these warmups. I am pretty much warming up to do nothing. By the time I get off work and get everything else done, and finish the warmup, it is time for me to go to bed. <br />
<br />
I guess it is still good practice.Walter Ostliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17150771699713631888noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8826804444369433678.post-37294076677012961082011-08-31T21:52:00.003-04:002011-08-31T21:52:54.844-04:00Warmup: X-23<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-_9AK4N7QGEH53Tc9KtRoLl5Z4wQG24OOsQvPwDooFy4CTLITqlzIuUNBKkSumf4ei5-ZTw3rhgr2HazBD6qnIvjMsf7CY0yhpbENex5AA8jT_nh90yz22SzK1dcLaW9clr0GIiM8w-by/s1600/20110831_x23.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-_9AK4N7QGEH53Tc9KtRoLl5Z4wQG24OOsQvPwDooFy4CTLITqlzIuUNBKkSumf4ei5-ZTw3rhgr2HazBD6qnIvjMsf7CY0yhpbENex5AA8jT_nh90yz22SzK1dcLaW9clr0GIiM8w-by/s320/20110831_x23.jpg" width="207" xaa="true" /></a></div>
A little X-23 action. I've actually drawn her a few times, but I never quite get her right. Eventually I will. Also I want to start doing some more poses that overlap body parts. So we will see how well they go.<br />
<br />
Also the random face was a test of a new stylus I got and my ipad. I used sketchbook mobile. The stylus was from a Kickstarter project I backed. <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/donlehman/more-real-stylus-cap">http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/donlehman/more-real-stylus-cap</a><br />
<br />
The stylus works fairly well. Way better then my finger. But I have to press a little harder to get it to register. Also the tip is rubber, it slides pretty well, but it also bends a lot. So I feel like with all the quick movements involved with drawing and painting, I will eventually tear the tip off.<br />
<br />
I did all of it on the ipad. except the signature.<br />

Plus he is a pretty cool guy with a wicked sense of humor. So today's warmup is a bit of fan art for his webcomic, 2 Guys and Guy. Strip about 3 people that just have a horribly, dysfunctional relationship but in a humorous light. Yes, the girl's name is 'Guy'. Want to know why?<br />

</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">I also just got my first sketchcard job! Cards came in the mail today. I have no idea what the rules are about talking or showing the cards, but when I can I will show them off.<br />
<br />
I am kind of nervous cause I am supposed to do 10 cards and I only have 10 cards. The cards are custom printed, so I can't really mess up and start over on a fresh card. I think there may be some lightboxing involved on the first couple.<br />
<br />
Wish me luck.</div>Walter Ostliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17150771699713631888noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8826804444369433678.post-42248814653860334902011-08-28T09:43:00.000-04:002011-08-28T09:43:06.151-04:00Warmup: Buffy<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_YD1VyDbiUZcrDxjvmLIjQMWW6ecMIAu0TwUWXkGUmapcEPHFgRkqSO72yZQpQDyRm-vPtHummvTisqUDneadkpNkdmlAse-O7rtZuBqj8WQApgzGJmFsctL_eEYt0iZ3sfDkIK7K9OAB/s1600/20110828_buffy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_YD1VyDbiUZcrDxjvmLIjQMWW6ecMIAu0TwUWXkGUmapcEPHFgRkqSO72yZQpQDyRm-vPtHummvTisqUDneadkpNkdmlAse-O7rtZuBqj8WQApgzGJmFsctL_eEYt0iZ3sfDkIK7K9OAB/s320/20110828_buffy.jpg" width="287" /></a></div>Buffy is one of my favorite shows of all time. Doesn't really make sense that I've never drawn her. I think the reason is because I don't do likeness very well. As you can see here, the cheerleader outfit and stakes are what sell this as Buffy.<br />
<br />
I think doing caricatures and likeness is a different type of skill. One I never really practice. As much as I would like to be able to do it, there is just so many other things I need to learn.Walter Ostliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17150771699713631888noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8826804444369433678.post-40552308034502707272011-08-27T17:29:00.000-04:002011-08-27T17:29:49.144-04:00Warmup: King Shark<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCzjcqlbuEt4hqyneiu2aoMHo5zEFMumE9JlkFxJm9SHlEfzCvUpfvXvijpe0-hj8CGlH9khEx2qRB_9ZHOv4KPbGAEd5BUldQdvzdBVgiNXsz25n-hNgIsz-Wp_j1HzR0z7oVqvaJGHVL/s1600/20110827_kingshark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="286" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCzjcqlbuEt4hqyneiu2aoMHo5zEFMumE9JlkFxJm9SHlEfzCvUpfvXvijpe0-hj8CGlH9khEx2qRB_9ZHOv4KPbGAEd5BUldQdvzdBVgiNXsz25n-hNgIsz-Wp_j1HzR0z7oVqvaJGHVL/s320/20110827_kingshark.jpg" width="320" /></a>Well here's a character I didn't even know existed. I found out about him when I saw the cover for the new Suicide Squad. The one with the evil looking Harley on the cover. I didn't even see this guy in the background at first. I still know nothing about him.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

<br />
I don't really know too much about this guy. King of the seas, can talk to sea animals. He just always seemed pretty limited to me. But who knows, maybe he is super awesome and I just don't know.<br />
<br />
I will prolly check out Justice League #1 when it comes out.Walter Ostliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17150771699713631888noreply@blogger.com0
